Dockenfield has been a small agricultural settlement for centuries, its name likely derived from the Old English for a field where dock plants grew. The hamlet sits in the parish of Frensham and has always been a quiet place, overshadowed by nearby Farnham. St Mary's Church dates from the mid-19th century, built to serve the scattered farming community.
The surrounding landscape has deeper roots. Alice Holt Forest was a royal hunting ground in medieval times and supplied oak timber for shipbuilding, including vessels for the Royal Navy. The forest remains one of the largest areas of woodland in Surrey and Hampshire.
