A Riverside Stage with a National Reputation

The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre has occupied its distinctive riverside site beside Guildford’s town bridge since 1965, named after the celebrated Anglo–French actress who lived nearby. With a 568–seat main auditorium and the intimate Mill Studio downstairs, it offers an unusually broad programme for a regional theatre – from new writing and classic revivals to family pantomime and stand–up comedy.

Many of its in–house productions transfer to London’s West End, and the theatre regularly hosts pre–West End runs of major new shows, giving Guildford audiences an early look at tomorrow’s hits. Its reputation for quality has made it a magnet for leading actors, directors and playwrights for over half a century.

Beyond the Main Stage

The Mill Studio, a flexible black–box space seating up to 80, showcases new writing, experimental work and youth theatre. It serves as an incubator for emerging talent and provides a platform for local drama groups and touring fringe companies that might otherwise bypass Surrey entirely.

The theatre’s foyer bar and terrace overlook the River Wey, making it a popular pre–show meeting point. A programme of talks, workshops and backstage tours adds educational depth, while the annual pantomime – a Surrey institution – sells out months in advance each winter.
