Climbing to the Viewpoint

Newlands Corner sits at around 170 metres on the chalk ridge of the North Downs and offers one of the finest viewpoints in Surrey. The climb from Guildford follows the old Epsom road, rising steadily over four kilometres with an average gradient of around four per cent. It is a popular training climb for local riders, manageable enough for intermediates but with enough length to provide a proper workout.

At the top, the visitor centre makes a natural rest stop. The view south across the Tillingbourne Valley towards the greensand hills is exceptional, particularly in autumn when the beech woods below turn golden. On clear days, the South Downs are visible on the horizon some 30 miles distant.

The Valley Loop

From Newlands Corner, the route descends sharply via Water Lane into the valley, passing through Albury and on to Shere. The descent requires care as the lane is narrow with occasional potholes and blind bends. Shere is a natural halfway stop, with its ford across the Tillingbourne and cluster of pubs and tea rooms.

The return to Guildford follows the valley floor westward through Chilworth and Shalford, largely flat and fast along the A248 before picking up quieter lanes back into the town centre. The full circuit is an ideal after-work or Sunday morning ride, short enough to fit into a few hours but with enough climbing to feel worthwhile.
