Riverside Riding on the Thames
The Thames towpath between Weybridge and Kingston upon Thames provides one of the best traffic-free cycling routes in Surrey. The path follows the south bank of the river for much of its length, passing through a landscape of weirs, locks, riverside pubs and elegant houseboats. The surface is a mix of compacted gravel and tarmac, well maintained and suitable for most types of bicycle.
Highlights along the way include Shepperton Lock, the confluence of the River Wey and the Thames at Weybridge, and the imposing facade of Hampton Court Palace visible from the towpath on the opposite bank. The ride passes through Sunbury, Molesey and Thames Ditton, each with its own waterside character. Birdlife is abundant, with herons, cormorants and the occasional kingfisher along the quieter stretches.
Practical Information
The route can be started at either end. Weybridge has a convenient car park near the Wey Navigation confluence, while Kingston offers excellent transport links and facilities. The full distance is approximately 18 kilometres one way, making a return trip of 36 kilometres — a manageable day out for reasonably fit families.
There are numerous refreshment stops along the way, including The Minnow on the riverbank at Shepperton and cafés at Hampton Court. The path can be busy with pedestrians, dog walkers and other cyclists on sunny weekends, so a bell and courteous riding are essential. Some sections near locks can be narrow and may require dismounting. A hybrid or mountain bike is ideal for the mixed surfaces.
