Where Art Meets Garden
The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden near Ockley is one of the most original attractions in Surrey. Founded in the 1980s by the Dutch-born gallery owner Hannah Peschar and her landscape designer husband Anthony Paul, it combines a lush, naturalistic water garden with a rotating exhibition of contemporary sculpture. The garden occupies a wooded valley with streams, pools and dramatic foliage planting that provides a richly textured backdrop for the artworks.
Anthony Paul’s planting style favours bold, architectural plants – giant gunnera, ferns, grasses and bamboo – arranged in sweeping drifts that blur the boundary between garden and wild landscape. Sculptures by established and emerging artists are placed along the meandering paths, inviting visitors to discover each piece in its own green room.
Exhibitions & Practicalities
The sculpture collection changes regularly, with major shows in spring and summer. Works range from monumental steel and stone pieces to delicate glass and ceramic installations. Most pieces are available for purchase, making this a working gallery as well as a garden. The combination of art and horticulture has earned international recognition.
The garden is located off the A29 near Ockley, signposted from the village. Opening times are limited (typically Friday to Sunday, May to October) so check before visiting. There is no café, but the village of Ockley offers pubs and a local farm shop. Parking is free on site.
