An Elizabethan Estate with a Horticultural Heart
Loseley Park has been the home of the More-Molyneux family since Sir William More built the house in 1562 at the request of Elizabeth I. The mansion, constructed partly from stone salvaged from Waverley Abbey, sits within 1,400 acres of ancient parkland just south of Guildford. The gardens that surround the house have been developed over several centuries and were substantially redesigned in the early 2000s.
The centrepiece is the Walled Garden, divided into a series of distinct rooms. A white garden inspired by Sissinghurst leads through an arch into a rose garden containing over 1,000 bushes, followed by a cut-flower garden, an organic vegetable garden and a herb garden. The Moat Walk, flanked by lavender and catmint, runs along the edge of a medieval moat that predates the house.
Events & Visiting
Loseley Park opens its gardens and house to the public from May to September, with extended opening for special events. The estate hosts a popular series of seasonal events including the Loseley Park Summer Food Festival and open-air cinema evenings. The ice cream produced on the estate’s farm – Loseley Ice Cream – is a well-known Surrey brand.
The park is located off the B3000 between Guildford and Godalming, with free parking. Guildford station is approximately three miles away. The tea room in the courtyard serves home-made cakes and light lunches using produce from the estate where possible.
