Cultural Life in England’s Largest Village

Cranleigh Arts Centre has been the cultural heartbeat of this large Surrey village since 1975. Housed in a former school building on the High Street, it punches well above its weight for a rural venue, presenting a programme of live music, touring theatre, stand–up comedy, cinema screenings and exhibitions that would do credit to a much larger town.

Its 180–seat auditorium attracts a loyal local audience but also draws visitors from Guildford, Horsham and the surrounding villages. The intimate scale means that performers and audience are unusually close, creating an atmosphere that artists frequently praise. Over the years the centre has hosted everyone from national touring theatre companies to internationally known musicians and comedians.

Workshops, Exhibitions & Community

Beyond its performance programme, Cranleigh Arts Centre runs an extensive schedule of workshops and classes in art, pottery, photography, creative writing and more. Its gallery space hosts regular exhibitions by local and regional artists, and the centre plays host to community events ranging from craft fairs to charity fundraisers.

The centre is a registered charity governed by a volunteer board and supported by a dedicated team. Despite the challenges facing small arts organisations, it has consistently invested in upgrading its facilities – including improved sound and lighting, digital projection for cinema and enhanced accessibility – ensuring that it remains a vital community asset for Cranleigh and the wider Weald.
