Heritage Buildings, Contemporary Culture
Farnham Maltings occupies a cluster of 18th–century maltings buildings on the banks of the River Wey in Farnham. Since its transformation into an arts centre in the 1970s, it has grown into one of the most active cultural venues in the south of England, welcoming over 300,000 visitors a year to a programme that spans theatre, cinema, dance, music, comedy, craft fairs and community events.
The complex includes a 200–seat main performance space, a 60–seat studio cinema, a large craft market hall, workshop rooms and a popular café bar. Its architectural character – exposed brick, timber beams, cobbled courtyards – gives it a distinctive identity quite unlike a purpose–built arts centre, and the setting beside the river adds to its appeal.
A National Reputation for Innovation
Farnham Maltings has earned a national reputation for its work in developing new theatre and supporting emerging artists. It is a National Portfolio Organisation funded by Arts Council England and acts as a producing house, commissioning and touring original work that reaches audiences far beyond Farnham. Its annual Farnham Film Festival and regular craft markets are highlights of the local calendar.
Community engagement is woven into everything the Maltings does. Youth theatre, adult classes in ceramics, printmaking and creative writing, and outreach programmes for schools and care homes ensure that the venue serves the widest possible cross–section of the local population. It is also a popular venue for weddings, conferences and private hire, with the income supporting its charitable activities.
