Cruising the Wey
The River Wey and Godalming Navigations form one of the earliest waterways in England, predating most of the canal network. Managed by the National Trust since 1964, the navigation runs for nearly 20 miles from Godalming through Guildford to the Thames at Weybridge. Boat trips depart from Guildford’s Millmead area, taking passengers on gentle cruises past water meadows, historic mills and peaceful countryside that feels remarkably rural despite being in the heart of Surrey.
For families, the boat trips offer a relaxing change of pace from more high-energy attractions. Children enjoy watching the lock mechanisms in action and spotting kingfishers, herons and other waterbirds along the banks. The towpath alongside the navigation is also excellent for walking and cycling, and families often combine a short boat trip with a riverside picnic or a walk into Guildford’s town centre.
Booking & Details
Boat trips operate from spring to autumn, departing from the National Trust boathouse at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford. Trips typically last 40 to 60 minutes. Dapdune Wharf itself is worth visiting, with free entry to the wharf area where you can see a restored Wey barge and learn about the waterway’s history. Pre-booking is recommended for boat trips as spaces are limited. There is no dedicated car park at Dapdune Wharf, but Guildford town centre car parks are a short walk away.
