Wildlife on Your Doorstep
Tilgate Nature Centre sits within the 2,000-acre Tilgate Park in Crawley, just across the Surrey border in West Sussex. Despite its modest profile, it is home to over 100 species of animals from around the world, including red pandas, otters, lemurs, meerkats, wolves and an impressive reptile house. Admission to the nature centre is free, making it one of the best-value family attractions in the region.
The wider Tilgate Park adds enormously to a visit. There are three lakes, extensive woodland trails, a walled garden, a large adventure playground and a café by the main lake. Children can combine animal spotting with den building, pond dipping and nature walks. The park’s scale means it rarely feels crowded, even during school holidays.
How to Visit
Tilgate Park is off the A23 in Crawley, roughly 20 minutes’ drive from Dorking or Reigate. While technically in West Sussex, it is closer to many Surrey residents than attractions further west in the county. The nature centre is open daily year-round and there is no charge for entry, though a car park fee applies (pay on exit). Seasonal events include Halloween trails and Christmas activities. The park is well served by Crawley’s bus network from the town centre and Three Bridges station.
