Village Market Charm

Shere is often described as the prettiest village in Surrey, and its farmers’ market matches the setting. Held on a quarterly basis on the village recreation ground, the market is small – typically a dozen stalls – but the quality of the produce is consistently high. Local cheese makers, bakers, honey producers and smallholders selling seasonal fruit and vegetables make up the core, and the intimate scale means there is time to talk to every producer and learn about their methods. The village itself, with its Norman church, tile-hung cottages and clear chalk stream, provides a beautiful backdrop.

A Surrey Hills Experience

Many visitors combine a trip to Shere’s farmers’ market with a walk in the surrounding Surrey Hills. The village sits in the Tillingbourne valley, with footpaths leading up to Pitch Hill, Holmbury Hill and the silent pinewoods of Winterfold. After a morning spent filling a bag with artisan bread, free-range eggs and perhaps a jar of local honey, a ramble through the hills feels like a natural extension of the experience. Shere’s two pubs and its tea rooms offer refreshment before or after, making the whole outing a thoroughly enjoyable day in the countryside.
